Cosalt completes major crane installation project for the McArthur Group

12 August 2009

Cosalt has completed a major £87,000 contract with industrial products producer the McArthur-Group to supply and install a large crane system for handling bulk steel at the company's Plymouth warehousing facility.  The contract represents further expansion of Cosalt's lifting business which is just one of a wide range of services now offered under the Cosalt brand across the UK and Europe.

Installation of the two five tonne cranes and rail system involved the decommissioning of an existing smaller crane, creating new footings to support the new equipment and final assembly and testing on site.  Each crane has a 17m span and operates to a beam height of approximately 3.5m. Cosalt has also won the contract to provide regular inspection and maintenance of the cranes for the next three years.

The McArthur-Group is one of the UK's largest distributors and producers of industrial products. It manufactures and supplies a wide range of industrial fencing, steel beams, panels and plates, agricultural and building products, fastenings and fixings.  Their Plymouth site is used for stockholding of bulk steel. Many sections are over 12m in length and batches of the steel can weigh several tonnes.

Cosalt's Plymouth branch was responsible for project managing the contract, which presented a number of challenges.  Explained Branch Manager Ian Day: "We provided McArthur's with a complete project management service that included sourcing and transporting the cranes, their installation on site and commissioning.  To get the cranes to the site they had to be escorted through Plymouth in the evening to avoid too much traffic disruption and then carefully manoeuvred through a narrow entrance into the warehouse building.

"Sorting out the groundworks for the cranes proved to be a major challenge because the site is built on an old river bed.  To make sure the footings were strong enough we had to amend the footings from our original design."  For more information on Cosalt's lifting services, contact our specialist team at sales@cosalt.com
